An echocardiogram, often called a "heart ultrasound" or "cardiac echo," is a painless scan that uses sound waves to create moving images of your heart. It shows your cardiologist how well your heart is pumping, how your valves are working, and whether your heart is a healthy size and shape.

What is an echocardiogram used for?

An echocardiogram helps your doctor check your heart's function, size and valves. It is commonly used to investigate symptoms like breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations or fatigue, to monitor an existing heart condition, or as part of a routine cardiac check-up.

 

What happens during the test?

You will lie on an examination bed while a small amount of lubricant jelly is applied to the skin of your chest. A handheld probe is then moved gently across your chest to capture ultrasound images of your heart. The test is not painful and does not involve any needles or radiation.

How long does an echocardiogram take?

An echocardiogram at Bundoora Cardiology takes about 30 minutes.

How do I prepare for an echocardiogram?

No specific preparation is needed. You can eat, drink and take your usual medications beforehand. Just bring your Medicare card and any referral you have to your appointment.

How much does an echocardiogram cost?

Echocardiograms are bulk billed at Bundoora Cardiology if you have not had another within the last 24 months via your GP. Please bring your Medicare card.

 

Do I need a referral?

Yes, you will need a referral from your GP or specialist. Please email your referral to reception@bundooracardiology.com.au before your appointment so we can have it ready for your visit.
