Holter Monitor
A Holter monitor is a small, portable device that records the heart’s electrical activity continuously, usually for 24 to
48 hours. In Australia, this non-invasive test helps doctors investigate symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, and
fainting by tracking how the heart responds to normal daily activities and sleep.
The Testing Process
Fitting: A technician attaches several small sticky dots (electrodes) to the chest, which connect to a small, battery-operated monitor worn around the neck or waist. The fitting takes about 20 minutes.
Wearing a Holter Monitor:
You will wear the Holter monitor continuously, even while sleeping. Bathing or showering is not allowed while the Holter Monitor is attached. It is advisable to shower just before your appointment.
Results and Costs
Turnaround Time:
Once the monitoring period is completed, the patient returns to the clinic for the Holter Monitor to be removed by the technician. A specialist technician and a cardiologist analyse the data and reports are generally sent to the referring doctor within 24 to 48 hours.
Cost:
Holter monitoring is bulk-billed and covered by Medicare, there are no out-of-pocket expenses for patients with a valid Medicare card.
How to Prepare
Clothing: Loose, comfortable, two-piece outfit (like a button-up shirt and pants) so the technician can easily place the electrodes on your chest.
